  • Images & Video: Watermarks are woven into pixel-level data of images and frames of video, making them resilient to resizing, cropping, and image filters 
  • Audio: Hidden signatures are encoded directly into audio waveforms in a way that resists compression and typical manipulations. 
  • Text: SynthID subtly adjusts token-selection probabilities during text generation, producing statistical patterns that act like a watermark in the language model output.

What makes SynthID especially compelling is its dual nature: the watermarks are imperceptible to users but readily detectable via specialized tools—ensuring both quality and authenticity.

How SynthID Works

Image & Video Watermarking

SynthID uses generative adversarial networks (GANs) to learn and embed microscopic pixel-level patterns imperceptible to human eyes. These patterns remain intact even when the content is transformed or compressed. 

Audio Watermarking

The system applies encoded spectral signatures into the audio waveform—effectively embedding a secret key prior to normal audio generation. The watermark survives everyday edits like compression or noise addition.

Text Watermarking

SynthID wraps a “logits processor” around language models that adjusts token probabilities using a pseudorandom g-function. This creates detectable statistical patterns in the text without altering readability 

SynthID Detector: Bringing Transparency to All

Announced at Google I/O 2025, the SynthID Detector is a web-based portal that allows users—journalists, researchers, media professionals—to upload content and check for embedded SynthID watermarks. 

The detector doesn’t just confirm AI origin; it can also pinpoint which parts of an image, text, audio, or video are watermarked—a valuable capability for media verification. Currently in beta, the Detector is being rolled out via a waitlist for select testers, with broader access planned later in 2025

  • Tampering Risks: Sophisticated manipulation—especially in text—can degrade or remove watermark signals. While generally robust, SynthID isn’t immune to adversarial attacks.
  • Text Weaknesses: Strongly paraphrased, translated, or very short texts may fail detection.
  • Lack of Standardization: With watermarking efforts fragmented across companies, there’s no unified standard, limiting ecosystem interoperability.

The Road Ahead

SynthID is already shaping a future where authenticity is traceable by design:

  • Open Sourcing for Developers: The SynthID text-watermarking toolkit is part of Google’s Responsible Generative AI Toolkit on Hugging Face, enabling broader developer adoption.
  • Growing Partnerships: Google is collaborating with partners like NVIDIA’s Cosmos and verification platforms like GetReal Security to broaden SynthID’s reach.
